Questions About Cycling on the Old Rail Trail?
We've answered the most common questions from riders like you. Can't find what you're looking for? Get in touch .
Yes, it's genuinely flat the entire 14.4km route. The old railway line was built with minimal gradients for the trains, so you're cycling on the same gentle terrain the locomotives once traveled. You'll notice the occasional subtle slope, but nothing that requires gear changes or puts strain on your knees.
Most riders complete it in 45 minutes to an hour without stopping. On our guided experiences, we take 2-2.5 hours because we include rest stops, chat about the local history, and let you enjoy the scenery. There's no rush—we go at whatever pace feels comfortable for the group.
Not at all. We've had riders from their late 60s through their 80s complete it comfortably. The flat terrain and traffic-free path mean you can go at your own pace without pressure. If you've taken a break from cycling, our confidence workshops are perfect for easing back into it safely.
You're not alone—most of our riders are returning to cycling after a break. Before your first trail ride, we'd recommend our Cycling Confidence Workshop, where you'll refresh your skills, learn about gear systems, and practice on flat ground. It takes the nervousness out and builds real confidence. After that, the Old Rail Trail is the perfect place to enjoy riding again without traffic stress.
Bring your own if you have one—you'll know how it handles and it's familiar to you. If you don't have a bike or prefer not to transport yours, we can recommend local rental options in both Athlone and Mullingar with bikes suited for comfortable, leisurely riding.
Late spring through early autumn (May to September) is ideal—the weather's mild and daylight hours are long. Summer can get warm on the exposed sections, so we suggest early morning rides. Spring and autumn bring beautiful colors and fewer crowds. We run guided rides year-round, but always check the weather and dress in layers.
